A RESIDENT of Ompangela village in the Uukwiyu-Uushona Constituency of the Oshana Region drowned in a well while catching frogs on Monday afternoon.

According to a police report, the 54-year-old Jekonia Mungongolo was catching frogs in an oshana when the frogs moved into the deeper part of the water. He went after them but fell into a well and drowned.

A woman, who was also catching frogs nearby, witnessed the incident and screamed for help. A man from a nearby homestead rushed to assist, but it was already too late. The police reported that the man jumped into the water, retrieved Mungongolo, and pulled him out, but he was already deceased.

Incidents of drowning increase in the North during the rainy season, often involving people who venture into the water without first determining its depth.

The police are urging members of the public not to enter deep water to catch fish or frogs. “It is very dangerous and leads to loss of lives,” said the police.
