JARED Munjane, the 24-year-old man accused of the gruesome murder and rape of Gerome Granville Helgrian, a 41-year-old man, appeared before the Lüderitz Magistrate court today and was denied bail, with his case postponed to the 20th of October 2023.
It is alleged that Munjane stabbed the late Helgrian with a sharp object over 41 times all over the body, raped the deceased, and also stole the victim’s cellphone, 43-inch television set, and sound bar.
The suspect’s case was postponed to October for him to seek legal aid and for police investigations to continue. Still reeling from shock, the deceased’s mother, who only identified herself as Auntie Sylvie, said that her son’s body would be ferried from Keetmanshoop to Lüderitz today, and that they still do not know many details about what led to the gruesome murder.
She added that Helgrian grew up in Windhoek, with four siblings; however, he moved to Lüderitz to start his hairdressing business. “He was a very soft person who was open and who liked to give. That was the kind of person he was. I just want justice for my child. The manner in which he was murdered, a person cannot handle it really. It was very gruesome,” Sylvie said.
According to the initial police report, it is alleged that the deceased Helgrian was last seen on Saturday night, on 16th September 2023. After a tip-off from a concerned member of the public about the deceased’s mysterious disappearance, the police on Tuesday, 19th September, went to the house of the late Helgrian, broke down the door, and found his lifeless body. During investigations, the police recovered the stolen items and arrested Munjane.
