THE Omuthiya town council in the Oshikoto Region has until the 20th of October to provide the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, with the reason behind the suspension without benefits of two local councillors.
Councillors Moses Amukoto and Nghipudilo ya Shiindi, both of the Independent Patriots for Change, were suspended on 24 July for alleged misconduct and/or violation of the council’s code of conduct. Amukoto was suspended for 30 working days, while Ya Shiindi’s suspension is for an indefinite period.
The two IPC councillors landed in hot water after they allegedly organized an “unauthorized” community meeting where town residents complained about their disconnected water due to unpaid municipal bills that accumulated during the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a letter dated 5 October and addressed to Mayor Johannes Ndeutepo, Minister Uutoni pointed out that he already wrote letters on 30 August and 4 September, respectively, directing the Council concerning these matters.
“I have yet to receive an official communication on your council’s position. I am, therefore, hereby according your council the opportunity to provide me with a detailed account of what led to the reported un-procedural suspensions in spite of my advice and directive,” said Uutoni in a letter seen by Informanté.
He said that before he pronounces himself on the matter, he needs the town council’s response, which must reach him not later than the 20th of this month.
