THE Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation has expressed its concern about the unfortunate incident during which a Namibian national lost his eyesight in Johannesburg, South Africa, last week. Amb. Sabine Böhlke-Möller, Acting Executive Director of the Ministry of International Relations, stated that the High Commission of the Republic of Namibia in Pretoria, in collaboration with South African authorities, is in the process of establishing the facts surrounding this tragic incident and bringing the culprits to justice.
“The Namibian Mission has made contact with the victim, who has since returned home to Namibia and is receiving treatment at the Central Hospital in Windhoek. While regretting this unfortunate incident, the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation wishes to call for calm during the ongoing investigations. Namibia continues to maintain cordial relations with the Republic of South Africa,” Amb. Böhlke-Möller concluded.
According to preliminary reports, it is alleged that the victim, Sam Shikongo, who is a bus driver from Okahandja, was shot, with the bullet entering through one eye and exiting through the other, effectively blinding him. It is alleged that Shikongo, who regularly travels to Johannesburg to transport Namibians for shopping in South Africa, was shot at a car dealership owned by a Malawian national. Authorities suspect that Shikongo was the sole target in this hit-and-run incident.
