A MINOR girl who passed away due to food poisoning in the Kavango East region has been identified as Likuwa Melania Nahambo, a one-year-old baby girl.
While young Nahambo succumbed to eating mutate, it is reported that six other children identified as Shinyemba Christoph Shinyemba, a 12-year-old male; Haingura Johanna Nmvura, a two-year-old female; Shinyemba Winbard Kaveto, a two-year-old male; Kaveto Collestinus Shindimba, ten years old; Kapinga Markus Shikoka, a four-year-old male neighbor; and Muduva Manfred Kaundu, a five-year-old male, also a neighbor to the family, were transported to the Rundu hospital.
According to Kavango East Acting Regional Commander, Eino Nambahu, the report of food poisoning reached the station about 23:00 last night from Livayi village Ndiyona policing area Kavango East region.
“The report stated that a certain family consumed food and started vomiting thereafter. It is alleged that the family prepared lunch of mutete with porridge, which they finished consuming. At this time, only one among the elder kids complained of stomach aches. The family prepared supper again, milk with porridge at about 17:00, which they consumed. At about 19:00, one of the kids started vomiting and becoming weak and later passed away,” Commander Nambahu said.
He added that the police from Ndiyona Police Station, accompanied by medical personnel from Nyangana Hospital, departed to the scene and found one victim dead while others were vomiting and in a weak condition.
“The medical officer started giving first aid immediately to stabilize their condition. They were rushed to Nyangana Hospital, where they were later transferred to Rundu Intermediate Hospital. A team from Nampol and the Ministry of Health departed this morning to assess the situation. All samples are collected for laboratory investigation in this matter,” Nambahu concluded.
