Miss Ability Namibia 2022 laid to rest

Miss Ability Namibia 2022 Elizabeth ‘Queen’ Angondji (30) was buried on Saturday.

Angondji died due to a wound infection at Oshakati Intermediate Hospital on Wednesday.

A memorial service was held for her at the home of Shopati Johannes at Ongwediva on Friday.

Angondji’s funeral took place at Oikokola Cemetery at Oikokola village in the Omusati region on Saturday.

“The bravest heart that put up a fight and advocated for people with disabilities’ inclusivity at an airline is no more.

“The lady who showed and proved herself to a telecommunications company is no more.

“Her precious tiny body with a big heart went to rest in peace.

“All that is left is her legacy. She will be remembered for saying disability is not inability,” said Eva Josaphat, the founder of the Miss Ability Namibia pageant.

She said Angondji earlier this year reached out on social media seeking help to purchase a device to treat the wound, which was not successful.

“The machine she needed cost around N$40 000, but we did not manage to raise that amount.

“She managed to get a smaller machine during her last days still alive, but it did not provide the expected relief,” Josaphat said.

She described Angondji as a hard-working, determined, strong and ambitious young woman, with an inspiring life story.

“She really inspired me. She was business-minded.

“She first started selling airtime from the hospital at Oshakati, and later made jewellery to sell.

“She was always strong. Even in her worst days when she was very ill, she would still ensure everyone that she was okay,” Josaphat said.

As a contestant for Miss Ability Namibia 2022, Angondji said she participated because she wanted to share her story and inspire others.

“Taking part in Miss Ability Namibia . . . it’s nothing but confidence that pushed me to work hard.

“I believe being disabled does not mean I am unable to do what able-bodied are doing . . .

“I do not want to pity myself and sit at home, I have to provide for myself. I am happy to take part and represent all disabled beautiful women of Oshakati,” she said at the time.
