President Hage Geingob, the outgoing chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, wants more interventions to address conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Mozambique.
In his last statement as chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, Geingob said during a SADC summit in Angola on Thursday that interventions in support of the territorial integrity of the DRC and Mozambique should be strengthened.
International relations minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said last month that despite efforts, the SADC Troika ministerial committee was still confronted with changing dynamics in eastern DRC.
She said this was mainly due to the resurgence of the M23 armed group and proliferation of illegal armed groups, of which some launch attacks against civilians, state security agencies and public infrastructure.
Last month, SADC roped in the United Nations to assist in the conflict in the eastern DRC.
The economic block has also deployed the SADC Force Intervention Brigade to the eastern part of the DRC.
This is part of the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC, which is aimed at securing the eastern part of the country and restoring its overall territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, in Mozambique an estimated 945 000 people have been internally displaced by armed conflict in the country’s northern Cabo Delgado province.
