HEAVY rain showers have now broken out in Keetmanshoop in the //Kharas Region, where rain and hail showers have turned the southern town’s streets into flowing rivers.
According to the Namibia Meteorological Services, Keetmanshoop will likely experience more thundershowers for the rest of this week, specifically on Wednesday and Thursday.
In addition to Keetmanshoop, the Namibia Meteorological Services highlighted Rundu, Ondangwa, and Windhoek as other areas likely to experience thundershowers between Wednesday and Friday. However, it is not just these areas that will see rain showers this week. Namibia Meteorological Services predicted that scattered to widespread thundershowers are generally expected in the northern, central, and south-eastern parts of the country on Wednesday.
Several places in the interior parts of the country have already witnessed substantial rainfall this past weekend. This includes northern places such as Halali and King Nehale, which according to the Namibia Meteorological Services recorded 26 millimetres (mm) and 10.5mm of rain between Monday and Tuesday morning. Additionally, Grootfontein in the Otjzondjupa Region and Omaruru in the Erongo Region recorded 7.6mm and 3.6mm of rain during the same period.
However, the recent long Easter weekend generally saw impressive rainfall across various regions, with social media flooded with images, videos, and rainfall measurements showcasing the widespread rainfall. Weather enthusiasts reported significant rainfall in areas such as Farm Dalmuta in the Omaheke Region, Nordeck in the //Kharas Region, and Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region, which received 53mm, 110mm, and 55mm of rain respectively between Sunday and Monday.
These were not the only places that were touched by the rain this Easter. Several other places such as //Kharas Region’s Karasburg, Omaheke Region’s Gobabis, Erongo Region’s Uis, Otjozondjupa Region’s Otjiwarongo and Otavi, as well as Hardap Region’s Mariental, Houmoed, and Gochas, among others, received light to heavy rainfall during the past weekend.
Social media platforms were abuzz with photos and videos capturing cloudy skies, rainbows, flooded streets, and nearly-full rain gauges, reflecting both the widespread rainfall experienced over the long weekend and the evident appreciation for rain among Namibians.
