THE MTC-Kilimanjaro Boxing Club is embarking on its first-ever regional tours to various northern communities, providing free basic boxing training to school-age youngsters, both girls and boys. Boxing stands as the most popular sport in the northern section of the country.

The program, named “Get Into Amateur Boxing Development in Schools and Society,” will commence on the 22nd of January in the Zambezi Region. It will then move to Kavango East on the 19th of February, Kavango West on the 4th of March, followed by the O-regions from the 18th of March to the 4th of August 2023. The Club will conclude its tour in the Kunene Region on the 9th of September 2023.

According to club founder Joseph Benhard, boxing is a sport that encourages more people to participate as it provides talented children in different regions with the opportunity to showcase their abilities. “Since there are not many gyms, this will provide children with an opportunity to try out basic boxing throughout the weeks that the Club will be offering training,” he said.

Benhard added that this session is open to both boys and girls interested in boxing as a sport. The program commenced last month with a coaching clinic for the ten coaches selected to join the MTC-Kilimanjaro team on this journey to develop boxing in the Northern seven regions.

Upon completion of the tour, Benhard mentioned that they will host the first-ever seven-region amateur boxing tournament. This event will see many boxers step into the boxing ring for the first time to display their skills. The aim is to provide all young men aged 13 and above with the opportunity to showcase their talents.
