Namib Mills Investment Group has announced the successful completion of its Solar Emission Reduction Project, marking a significant step towards a sustainable and greener future for Namibia.

The project involves the construction and operation of a solar plant, reinforcing Namib Mills Investment Group’s commitment to environmental responsibility and energy independence.

The solar plant, which is located at Namib Poultry Industries, just outside of Windhoek, comprises of a 2,850-kW grid-connected solar PV plant. The plant utilise cutting-edge monocrystalline silicon panels, optimising their efficiency and output. This groundbreaking initiative aligns with Namibia’s goal of achieving a 70% share of renewables in its energy mix by 2030.

The solar plant will contribute to the reduction of reliance on high-intensity fossil fuel. Namibia’s abundance of sunlight hours per year makes the solar installation a strategic and sustainable choice for cleaner energy.

Namib Mills Investment Group is proud to be among one of the pioneers in selling carbon credits, with the carbon registration process completed in partnership with an international company and registered with Credible Carbon, a reputable South African company. The project not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also contributes to various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), enhancing Namibia’s energy security and autonomy. Furthermore, in line with corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments, Namib Mills has pledged to donate 50% of the revenue generated from the sale of carbon reduction credits to existing CSR projects. These funds will support a range of CSR initiatives, including financial contributions and food donation programs. Namib Mills successfully completed the audit for the project in February 2023 and achieved a milestone by selling its first carbon credits in December 2023. This project not only exemplifies Namib Mills’ dedication to environmental sustainability but also serves as a beacon for other businesses to follow suit in contributing to Namibia’s renewable energy future.
