THE Namibian squash team bounced back from their opening match defeat to Northerns C on Monday by defeating KwaZulu Natal B 20-4 on Tuesday morning at the ongoing Growthpoint Interprovincial Squash Tournament in Pretoria.
Namibia beat Northerns A 19-6 earlier on Wednesday and sits second on their log.
The tournament started on July 9, 2023, and Namibia is represented by six players: The two Trustco powerhouses Max Endjala and Le-Hugo van Rooyen, Danie Greeff, Emil Dörgeloh, Christof Knoetze, and Steven John Berry.
The Namibian team is currently performing at the highest level ever at this tournament.
In an interview with Informanté, Steven Berry, General Manager of Wanderers Sports Club, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to contend for a semi-final position, despite the initial setback in their first match.
Berry noted that the tournament is highly competitive, with Northerns C currently leading the group category. He mentioned that Northerns C’s victory over the Namibian squad on Monday propelled them to the top of the group with a 10-9 win and an additional bonus point, securing a comfortable 15-9 overall victory.
Namibia has advanced to compete in the semi-finals on Thursday.
“If Kwazulu Natal B manages to beat Northerns C and we finish on top of our group, we will also secure a favourable fixture in the semi-finals. We hope to avoid the strongest team on the other side, SACD C, and potentially face them in the finals. Winning our group would allow us to move up and get promoted to a better division next year, which Namibia has never managed to do in all the years of IPT,” Berry added.
The current standings in the Men’s C section Red Group of the competition are as follows:
Northerns C is in the lead with 52 points, followed by Namibia with 48 points, Kwazulu Natal B with 24 points, and Easterns A with 18 points.
