WINDHOEK, July 10 — Namibia is poised to emerge as a significant contender in the global green hydrogen market, driven by its abundant renewable energy resources such as solar and wind power. The country’s favourable conditions make it an ideal location for hydrogen production. To further boost its position, the Namibian government is actively seeking foreign investment in the green hydrogen sector.
In a promising development, the Namibian government inked a $10 billion agreement with German company Hyphen in June 2022. The deal aims to produce two million tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2030. This venture is just one of several green hydrogen projects currently underway in Namibia.
The Namibian government envisions green hydrogen as a catalyst for substantial economic growth in the country. The production of green hydrogen would generate employment opportunities, enhance exports, and contribute to diversifying Namibia’s economy.
Nevertheless, Namibia must address certain challenges to establish itself as a prominent green hydrogen producer. The production costs of green hydrogen remain relatively high, and the development of infrastructure for hydrogen transportation and storage is essential.
However, bolstered by its abundant renewable energy resources and supportive governmental policies, Namibia’s administration maintains a positive outlook regarding the country’s potential to become a significant player in the global green hydrogen market. Namibia is well-positioned to lead the charge in the clean energy transition. – Namibia Daily News
