STARTING today, Namibia joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW), which runs from Monday to the following Monday. During this week, Namibians are encouraged to join the fight against superbugs that threaten health, communities, and the future.
Commemoration activities throughout the week are jointly spearheaded by the Ministries of Health and Social Services; Agriculture, Water and Land Reform; and Environment, Forestry, and Tourism. Other stakeholders include the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI), and the Namibia Institute of Pathology (NIP).
The aim is to raise awareness and encourage responsible practices regarding antimicrobial agents, including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics.
According to a joint statement by the organizers, Namibia is intensifying its efforts to tackle one of the world’s most pressing health threats—antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The statement from the tripartite ministries reads:
“WAAW is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness of AMR and promoting best practices to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections in humans, animals, and the environment. From 18–24 November 2024, WAAW brings global attention to the growing issue of AMR and the critical role each of us plays in preventing it.
Superbugs—bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites resistant to existing treatment—are becoming increasingly common, making infections harder to treat and putting lives at risk. Without urgent action, we will face a world where common infections are untreatable, leading to longer hospital stays, more expensive treatments, and even more fatalities.
However, there is hope. By understanding how antimicrobials such as antibiotics work and using them responsibly, you can be part of the solution! WAAW 2024 aims to inspire every Namibian to act, from healthcare workers to everyday citizens.”
The statement outlines ways everyone can play a role:
- Do not misuse or overuse antimicrobials: Only take or use these medicines when prescribed by a healthcare professional for yourself or your animals.
- Complete your course: Always finish the full course of antibiotics, even if you or your animals feel better before the course is complete.
- Never share antibiotics or use leftovers: Avoid self-medication. This also applies to animal health.
- Prevent infections and practice good hygiene: Wash your hands regularly, get vaccinated, and ensure your animals are vaccinated.
- Speak up: Educate your friends and family about the dangers of antimicrobial resistance and the importance of using antibiotics responsibly.
This year’s theme for WAAW is “Educate. Advocate. Act Now.” It calls on the global community to educate everyone about AMR, advocate for bold commitments, and take concrete actions to address the issue.
The WAAW slogan remains “Antimicrobials: Handle with Care.”
