The Essence of Professionalism
The core theme of the speech revolved around the importance of professionalism in the military. President Geingob underscored that professionalism is the bedrock of modern conventional militaries. As professionally qualified officers, the graduates were expected to exhibit conduct and qualities that represent the Namibian Defence Force and the nation. This demand for professionalism stems from the need for soldiers to acquire the skills and knowledge required to effectively carry out their assigned roles.
President Geingob referenced the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, which stresses that contemporary military operations are often related to constabulary or counter-insurgency tasks. To fulfil these missions effectively, the military must prioritize strengthening the competence, compassion, and respect of its personnel. This perspective reinforces the idea that the military’s primary mission is to protect citizens and maintain security.
A Call to Uphold Integrity

He expected them to be consummate professionals and role models, guiding their subordinates to abide by military rules and regulations while upholding a positive public image of military personnel. The President also stressed the importance of discipline and exemplary behaviour, both within the military and when interacting with the community.
Expectations and Responsibility
As Commander-In-Chief, President Geingob made it clear that he expected the officers and their subordinates to always exhibit exemplary behaviour and to act in a manner that did not endanger the citizens of Namibia. He emphasized the importance of carrying out their duties with tact and respect, reinforcing the idea that the military’s role is to protect and serve the nation.
Acknowledging Support
The President took a moment to acknowledge the support of the graduates’ loved ones, especially their parents, spouses, families, and friends. He expressed gratitude for their encouragement and unwavering support during the officers’ journey towards graduation. He also recognized the dedication of the Chief of the Namibian Defence Force, the entire leadership, and the instructors who played a crucial role in passing down their knowledge and expertise to the new cohort of officers.
