Namibian student to attend international youth diplomacy conference

Hailing from the small town of Opuwo in the Kunene region, Arminda Hepute, a diploma student in community counselling, says the story of a young boy who was taken out of school to tend to the farm has inspired her.

After the death of her sister, Hepute says she went for counselling and realised how much it helped make a difference in her life.

She then opted for community counselling, she says.

“I wanted to help the people in my community who need help,” she says.

Hepute was selected to attend the African Youth Leadership Diplomacy Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 16 to 19 February.

She says the conference is a gateway to personal and professional growth, where attendees are able to meet new people and indulge in cultural diversity.

“It’s not just a conference, it’s an occasion where we dive into global issues. I will get to meet young African professionals and exchange ideas,” she says.

She says upon her return she plans to engage stakeholders and global partners to come up with projects to empower young people.

Hepute has also been appointed as an ambassador of Brits Global Organisation in Namibia, with the aim of eradicating poverty in the world.

She says the organisation considers people with disabilities, orphans and vulnerable children as well.

“I was moulded by the Youth Council, and they gave me the opportunity to expand my leadership training, but Brits has allowed me the opportunity to showcase my passion for the youth,” she says.

As part of advocating youth empowerment, Hepute says education should be used as a key to unlock doors.

She says it plays a crucial role in the fostering of community development as it equips individuals with the necessary skills to become productive members of society.

“By providing access to quality education, communities provide individuals with skills needed for employment and entrepreneurship,” Hepute says.

She is requesting assistance with a N$25 000 sponsorship to cover the conference fee, accommodation and local transport in Ethiopia, as well as a flight ticket from Windhoek to Addis Ababa.
