NAMIBIA’s rich and diverse cultures distinguish the country and make it stand out from the rest of the world. Namibians are encouraged to cherish and promote these cultures through initiatives such as the Olufuko Annual Cultural Festival.
Maria Nepembe, ‘The Face of Olufuko,’ highlighted the significance of Olufuko as a place where young girls undergo initiation rites, transitioning into womanhood while deepening their knowledge of culture and traditions. She emphasized that Olufuko plays a crucial role in preventing teenage pregnancy by teaching girls self-care and essential household tasks, as well as preserving customary norms that might otherwise be lost in future generations. Nepembe herself underwent initiation rites during previous editions of Olufuko.
The ongoing 9th edition of the event, which began on July 1, will continue until Saturday.
