Nangolo Mbumba assumes Chairmanship of AU


Peace and Security Council for March 2024

ON March 1, 2024, Namibia will assume the role of Chair of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) under the leadership of H.E. Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, President of the Republic of Namibia.

This was announced by Ambassador Jerobeam Shaanika, Deputy Executive Director for Multilateral Relations and Cooperation, who said that through its membership in the PSC, Namibia contributes to the attainment of peace and security on the continent in pursuit of Agenda 2063.

“During the month of March 2024, the PSC will hold six substantive sessions to consider, amongst others, the security situations in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Abyei, and Somalia. The PSC will also engage the Panel of Wise, FEMWISE, and YouthWise on their activities,” Ambassador Shaanika said.

He added that in addition to this, the Council will also hold a Ministerial Seminar on Women, Peace, and Security which will be hosted in Swakopmund, Namibia on March 23.

“The outcome of the Seminar will contribute towards a framework on increasing women’s participation in peace processes on the continent. The Seminar will be followed by an Induction/Orientation Workshop for incoming and outgoing PSC Members, from March 25-27, 2024,” Ambassador Shaanika said.
