GODFREY Absalom Nangonya, a Pan-Africanist who played a role in several liberation movements in four different African countries and who died in a Windhoek hospital on the 21st of January at the age of 93, was accorded a State Funeral and, was laid to rest in the Ondobe village, Ohangwena Region, on Monday.
Considering himself a citizen of Africa, Nangonya’s political influence in the north of Namibia and the south of Angola was immeasurable, having mentored many youths who went on to play a role in the liberation struggle of both countries. Besides his involvement with Swapo, he was also involved with the ANC and the South African Communist Party, the MPLA and UNITA in Angola and Kenya’s Mau-Mau movement.
