THE 12th edition of the Namibia National Teachers Union (NANTU) tournament was officially launched in Oshakati on Tuesday.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from July 28th to 30th, 2023, under the theme: ‘A healthy teacher is a productive teacher’.
The tournament is resuming after three years of being put on hold due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The games will be played at Uukwangula and University of Namibia (UNAM) sports stadiums.
The tournament will consist of soccer, netball, and volleyball.
Elizabeth Mutaleni, Oshana NANTU Regional Acting Chairperson, indicated that the tournament was initially introduced by teachers and at the time focused on the O-4 regions only.
However, after 11 years, NANTU took over the hosting of the tournament and expanded it to various regions.
To date, participants will come from regions such as Oshana, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, Omusati, Kunene, Kavango West, Kavango East, Otjozondjupa, Hardap, Erongo, and hopefully Omahake.
Mutaleni noted that the tournament is open only to educators from various circuits across the country.
“The tournament is being held with the sole purpose of engaging teachers, coming together, and socializing,” she said.
NANTU Organizing Secretary Isreal Uugwanga emphasized that the tournament will unify teachers through sports.
So far, a total of 36 soccer teams from various circuits have registered, with more expected, while 18 netball and 9 volleyball teams have also shown interest.
Uugwanga thanked all their sponsors and extended an invitation to all Namibians to come on board and support the teachers.
First National Bank (FNB) sponsored N$15,000, and Pupkewitz Volkswagen Ongwediva offered various premium packages for teachers, which will be revealed at a later stage.
Furthermore, Build-it Oshakati and Jan Japan Motors have also joined as sponsors to ensure the successful hosting of the tournament.
The sponsors indicated that they are privileged to give back through an exciting tournament centred around boosting teachers.
