The Namibia Swimming Federation has brought out a statement confirming the postponement of its national championships, while also supporting the postponement due to former president Hage Geingob’s funeral arrangements this weekend.

“Nasfed wishes to reiterate that the federation is deeply saddened by the unexpected demise of the president Hage Geingob. Dr Geingob was an avid supporter and patron of sport and his contribution to development of the sector will be sorely missed,” it said in a statement.

“The federation is in full support of the postponement of the national championships and would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the grieving family and nation,” it added, saying that it will still try to reschedule the event “to honour the late president’s legacy, despite its full calendar.”

According to the statement, the only available dates for the championships are from 4 to 7 April, when it is hoped that “the national championships will take place and the athletes will be afforded the opportunity to showcase their skills.”

The Nasfed statement also clarified a previous report about the status of Namibian teams that will compete in upcoming international events.

The team selected for the 13th Africa Games in Accra, Ghana in March will represent Namibia and has the status of the Namibian national team, but swimmers participating in South African events like the age group galas and the junior and senior national championships are Nasfed teams that will represent the federation.
