National Youth Council leadership dissolved over mismanagement

The National Youth Council is without a board after the Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service dissolved the board with immediate effect.

Minister Agness Tjongarero cited what she calls “serious contraventions” of the Act as the reason for the removal of the board.

The minister, in a media statement issued on the 13th of December, indicated nine contraventions of the National Youth Council Act.

Disregard of ministerial directives is one of them, as the board consistently ignored the directives of the minister, dragging the ministry’s name into disrepute; mismanagement of funds, which affected the operations of the organization; maladministration of the institution, as the board failed in its oversight functions; and failure to commemorate the National Youth Week.

Other transgressions include non-compliance with procurement procedures, as the board bypassed procurement protocol; dishonesty among board members; failure to disclose conflicts of interest, which compromised transparency and accountability; and wasting of organizational resources.

Tjongarero said the board misused company resources on unsanctioned meetings, undermining operational efficiency.

The minister, therefore, deemed it necessary to dismiss the board with immediate effect in the name of accountability and to ensure the proper functioning of the organization.

The axing of the board follows the minister’s instruction that the leadership elections of the NYC, to be held at the weekend, be called off.

When the board defied the order, Minister Tjongarero decided to fire the body, as they were gathered at Rietfontein to elect new leadership.

The minister is now expected to appoint a temporary board to drive the leadership change process.

The current executive chairperson of the NYC, Sharonice Busch, was to relinquish her position on the board after being elected to the National Assembly on the Swapo Party ticket during the just-concluded elections.
