NESTLED against the bare granite peaks of Spitzkoppe, Katora Primary School portrayed a stark image prior to the visit by the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and Miss Namibia, Jameela Uiras, with broken windows and faded paint.
However, following the gracious visit by the NBC Cares Foundation and Namibia’s Miss Universe Contestant, Uiras, over the past weekend, the school underwent much-needed renovations. The school’s transformation was made possible by contributions from NBC, Neo Paints, and Erongo Red.
The donated paint was utilized to revitalize the school’s dining hall and kitchen. However, the school still requires assistance, as some of its hostel windows remain broken, posing a risk to the safety of its students.
Speaking at the event, Miss Namibia Uiras encouraged the learners to pursue their dreams despite their current circumstances. “I am honoured to be here as Miss Namibia 2023, addressing all of you, the future leaders of our nation. Today, I want to discuss the power of youth in building peace and the potential each one of you possesses to make a difference. Youth empowerment is when young people take control of their lives and future. Peace encompasses not only the absence of war but also the presence of love, understanding, compassion, tolerance, patience, and unity. These words stem from Ambassador Morina Muuondjo, who advocates for peace through the Namibia International Women’s Peace Centre. As learners, you have the authority to shape the future by embracing values that promote peace. Youth empowerment is the key to unlocking this potential,” Uiras stated.
She further conveyed to the students that through empowering themselves with education, respect, and a thirst for knowledge, they are arming themselves with the necessary tools to construct a harmonious society. “By diligently studying, heeding your parents and teachers, and believing in yourselves, you are championing a culture of peace within your school and communities. No question is foolish, so ask as many as you can,” Uiras encouraged the learners.
