There is a need for Namibia to step up and develop a system to translate the Namibian languages on the web.
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Commission on Research, Science, and Technology, Anicia Peters, said this at the National Science Fair Week.
Peters says science is more than just a subject, and the National Commission on Research, Science, and Technology is planning to remove the limitation of just students participating but to include art and design as well.
“This week is a reminder that science is not just a school subject or confined to laboratories; it is a dynamic, living force that shapes our world and our future, from the latest breakthroughs in medicine and technology to the mysteries of our universe.”
Peters says that the fair must have the ability to tackle global challenges, improve lives, and create a brighter future for all.
“According to the 2021 NCHE statistics, the total higher education student enrollment was 68,932. Of this total student enrollment, only 16 735 students, or 24.3%, were in STEM fields; however, sadly, only 17.7% completed their courses and their programmes.”
The science fair aims at offering students a robust educational opportunity, one that can make a difference in their outlook on science and engineering, in their awareness of themselves as scientists and engineers, and in how they think about the future.
Students are also able to do an independent science project following either the scientific method or the engineering design process and conduct their research, which they will present at the science fair.
The categories participating this year include animal science, chemistry, environmental science, plant science, energy, and electricity, among others.
This year, there will be up to 31 activities that will attract more than 3,000 participants countrywide.
The fair runs from the 6th to the 10th of this month.
