THE eviction of Namibian cattle farmers from Angola’s Oshimholo grazing fields is expected to be one of the prominent items on the agenda of the newly appointed governor of the Ohangwena Region, General (retired) Sebastian Ndeitunga. Ndeitunga was appointed governor of Ohangwena on Wednesday by President Hage Geingob, replacing Walde Ndevashiya, who served as the political head of the region since 2020. The appointment comes at a time when Angolan authorities are threatening to evict approximately 300 Namibian farmers with herds permanently grazing in Oshilholo and surrounding areas.
Speaking to Informante, Ndeitunga mentioned that as he settles into his new office, he will assess the issues on the table. He plans to consult leaders at different levels in the region before taking action. Water scarcity and grazing concerns will be his top priorities.
“I will have to speak with my Angolan counterpart about the serious matter of grazing for our farmers,” he emphasized.
Ndeitunga, a Cuba-trained jurist, served as the Inspector-General of the Namibian police from 2005 until his retirement last year. Despite anticipating a well-deserved retirement, he accepted the governor appointment not for material benefits but due to a sense of responsibility towards the nation. “It is an honour bestowed upon me by the President, an opportunity to serve the Namibian people,” he said.
