Nedbank Namibia concluded its kapana cook-off competition over the weekend at the Ongwediva Trade Fair, with the crowning of Ester Silas as the winner.
The competition, which started on 24 June, showcased the growth and potential of the Namibian kapana delicacy, from being a street snack into a thriving commercial venture.
Silas, the 2023 Nedbank Kapana Cook-Off winner, walked away with a fully equipped mobile food trailer, N$10 000 cash prize, and a N$5 000 Bakpro vetkoek voucher.
“Winning this competition means the world to me. It’s a validation of my hard work and it fuels my passion for sharing my love for Namibian food such as kapana. I’m incredibly thankful to God for blessing me, my family and friends for their support and always believing in me,” said Silas.
Loise Iimvula was the first runner-up and Laura Egumbo the second runner-up.
Nedbank has contributed N$7 million towards the competition since its inception in 2014, with financial contribution to winners reaching almost N$2 million.
Martha Murorua, the managing director of Nedbank, said this investment underscores the bank’s dedication to economic growth and the development of small businesses.
“The true impact of the competition is evident in the successes of past winners, who have evolved into culinary pioneers and successful entrepreneurs. They have not only started, but also expanded their businesses, in some instances, “ said Murorua.
This year’s Nedbank Kapana Cook-off Competition was a captivating journey that began with regional rounds at Oshakati, Walvis Bay and in Windhoek.
These events allowed contestants to showcase their skills and creativity, setting the stage for a competitive finale.
