Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters deputy leader Kalimbo Iipumbu has said the coup which has toppled president Mohamed Bazoum in Niger is due to a general failure by African leaders to address bread-and-butter issues.
Iipumbu, who is in South Africa as part of the Economic Freedom Fighters’ 10th anniversary celebrations, also blamed leaders of being “used” by Western powers against the aspirations of their people.
“Looking at what is developing in Niger, we are really heartbroken by the news particularly that the president had been elected by Niger’s people and failed to uphold and restore the economic system of the country,” Iipumbu said.
“People are starving and dying of hunger in that country and he continues to ignore the will of the masses. A hungry nation is an angry nation and it is always difficult to detect what might occur tomorrow.
“African leaders must stop being used by the West and focus on the upbringing of their own people. Democracy should not blind us and make us forget that power is the people,” he said.
