DEPUTY Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, officially inaugurated the 700m Oshikuku Extension 1, which was constructed at the cost of N$3.7 million.
Nekundi mentioned that this project was jointly funded through a government subsidy, funds from the Road Fund Administration, and contributions from the Oshikuku Town Council.
He highlighted that the Oshikuku Town Council allocated N$3 million in the 2023/2024 financial year for the upgrading of the road at Oshikuku Extension 2 to bitumen standard. Additionally, the Council received an allocation of N$943,000 from the Road Fund Administration for the maintenance of roads within Oshikuku town.
“Roads constructed but not maintained are a waste of public funds. Thus, the Oshikuku Town Council should be applauded for this important foresight in ensuring the provision of budgetary funds towards road maintenance,” he said.
Nekundi emphasized that the government is committed to achieving this goal without any compromise. This commitment is evident through various policy interventions enacted through parliament to address bottlenecks in providing services to communities.
All these efforts are aimed at improving the Council’s road infrastructure and attracting much-needed investment opportunities for Oshikuku town, Nekundi added.
He stressed that the Oshikuku Town Council is determined to develop the town for investment opportunities and improve the livelihood of its residents and visitors alike.
Oshikuku Town Mayor Julia Endjambi indicated that the lack of sufficient resources hampers their efforts to deliver these services within a short timeframe.
According to Endjambi, they take pride in their efforts to deliver services to the community despite facing challenges with limited financial resources.
“This road is one of the old roads in Oshikuku and was recently upgraded from gravel to bitumen standard,” she said.
She added that the upgrading of this road demonstrates their recognition of its origin, as it was the access road to the Roman Catholic Mission and to St. Martin’s Hospital before Oshikuku became what it is now.
