Netball Namibia’s president, Rebekka Goagoses has called on local authorities to prioritise the construction of proper sports facilities or repurpose warehouses and community spaces into sports venues, particularly those that can accommodate netball.
Goagoses made the appeal during the closing ceremony of the Africa Netball Cup 2024, held at the Dome in Swakopmund from 9 to 14 December.
“For this, I call on our local authorities to prioritise the construction of proper sports facilities. Let us turn our warehouses and community spaces into venues that nurture our athletes and prepare them for international competition,” she said.
The tournament saw South Africa clinch victory in both the women’s and men’s categories.
Highlighting one of the key challenges facing netball in Namibia, Goagoses said the lack of standardised facilities remains a significant hurdle.
She urged both government and the private sector to reflect on the need for sustained support and investment in the sport.
‘’Netball – and sport in general – can be a powerful tool for development, but this can only happen with the right infrastructure in place,’’ stressed Goagoses.
She further emphasised the importance of professionalising the sport to ensure young athletes can achieve their dreams.
‘’We must continue to professionalise the sport, ensuring that the dreams of these young athletes are within reach. To the government, private sector, and all stakeholders, I urge you to deepen your commitment to this cause. Together, we can ensure that netball remains a vibrant and inspiring sport in Namibia, creating opportunities for future generations,’’ she urged.
In support of her appeal, Ongwediva Mayor Tarah Shalyefu highlighted the availability of underutilised spaces in the town that could be transformed into sports venues.
‘’We have the queen’s hall and king’s hall at the Trade Fair Center that can be used for such sports, and currently, nobody is making use of them. The only time they are used is when there is a graduation ceremony. But sometimes they are also used for boxing events, but this is mostly during the trade fair days,’’ said Shalyefu.
