WINDHOEK, August 15 – Shoki Kandjimi, President of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) Alumni Association, has unveiled an impactful initiative today: the Walk-Run De NUST project. Geared towards supporting underprivileged students with their registration fees for the upcoming 2024 academic year, this fundraising event addresses a significant hurdle in Namibia’s higher education landscape.
Registration fees often act as barriers for matriculants from disadvantaged backgrounds who aspire to pursue higher education. In response, the NUST Alumni Association has introduced the Walk-Run De NUST initiative, a sports event designed to generate funds for the NUST Alumni Social Welfare Fund.
“Our aim is to aid both undergraduate and postgraduate students based on the proceeds of this initiative,” Kandjimi shared. Following the event, applications for assistance from the newly established fund will be accepted and reviewed by a designated committee to select beneficiaries.
The initiative seeks to foster a symbiotic relationship between NUST and its alumni, promoting a healthy lifestyle among the alumni and, consequently, the broader community.
Bringing an additional layer of significance to the event, the association revealed that Ndawana Haitembu, a National Sports Athlete and NUST alumna, has been chosen as the official Ambassador of the Walk/Run De NUST Initiative. Her involvement is expected to extend the reach and impact of the initiative.
“We are thrilled to announce Ndawana Haitembu as our official Ambassador,” Kandjimi announced. “Her engagement in this endeavor will greatly amplify our mission to create real change in the lives of students aspiring to access higher education at NUST but facing financial constraints.”
Kandjimi warmly invited potential sponsors, businesses, and the public to lend their support to the initiative through contributions to the NUST Alumni Social Welfare Fund or in-kind assistance. He also encouraged Windhoek residents to participate in the Walk-Run De NUST event, scheduled for September 30, 2023.
Participants are required to pay a registration fee of N$100 for NUST alumni members and N$120 for non-members, while children can join for N$50. All proceeds will be channeled into the NUST Alumni Social Welfare Fund. The 10 Km walk/run will commence at 05:00, followed by the 5 Km fun walk at 05:30, both starting at the NUST main gate on Jackson Kaujeua Street.
“Let’s Run in Colours for a Greater Cause,” Kandjimi concluded, expressing gratitude to sponsors, stakeholders, and the organizing committee for their unwavering support and dedication.- Namibia Daily News
