More than 300 farmers from Ohangwena region have become beneficiaries of garden tools and small-scale irrigation systems valued at N$2, 2 million on Wednesday.
Other regions to benefit are //Kharas, Zambezi and Kavango West each receiving N$2,2 million.
The items which are funded by the government of Japan and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations ( FAO) in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform is aimed at addressing issues of food insecurity in the country.
FAO representative Qingyun Diao noted that the handover of the tools are testament to FAO’ s commitment which remains a dedicated partner of the Namibian government.
“These resources will equip farmers in Ohangwena region with the means to improve their agricultural practices, mitigate the effects of drought and ultimately grow more nutritious produce for themselves, their families and communities,” says Diao.
She further highlighted that the initiative is simply not about providing tools but it’s about investing in the future of Ohangwena region through resilience building.
“By empowering farmers, we are fostering a more sustainable and food secure nation.
Criteria used to select beneficiaries are that they had to be fulltime farmers with already existing agricultural projects.
