Omaheke Council aims to improve residents’ living standards

The Omaheke Regional Council is aimed at improving the living standards of the local people through various interventions, such as employment creation and other capital projects.

Speaking at the first ordinary council meeting at Gobabis, the Chairperson, Ignatius Kariseb, pointed out that agriculture is one of the key areas with immense potential to create job opportunities and address pressing social issues faced by communities, such as food insecurity.

The Regional Council, through the line ministry, has invested funds into water infrastructure, such as drilling and the installation of new boreholes in the region.

“The regional council is currently identifying land, ranging from two hectares within each constituency, to enhance food security and employment opportunities in our region. We will engage stakeholders who can provide the necessary funds and resources to develop this piece of land for agricultural purposes.

In education, the region has formulated effective strategies to improve educational outcomes.

The region also established an education fund aimed at assisting students who are admitted to tertiary institutions with registration fees.

Kariseb also reports that recently the council managed to complete some key capital projects, such as the construction of the Aminuis settlement office, the upgrading of water reticulation at Ben Hur, and the construction of a sewer infrastructure at Eiseb 10.

Omaheke Governor Pijoo Nganate stated that the region will strive for the diversification of the local economy and explore mechanisms that will allow for co-existence between the farming community and the mining sector.
