THE Ondangwa fish shop, operating under the banner of the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT), has generated nearly N$13 million in just seven months.

Suzan Ndjaleka, Chairperson of the NFCPT board of trustees, announced this on Monday, stating that during the financial period from January to July 2023, the shop distributed 538.99 tons of frozen fish and 1,578 cans of fish.

Ndjaleka highlighted that the Ondangwa fish shop is remarkably productive and has exceeded their expectations.

Furthermore, Ndjaleka mentioned that NFCPT is committed to increasing Namibia’s per capita fish consumption levels.

“Our determination arises from the need to address critical issues such as nutrition, food security, and alleviating entrenched poverty within our communities,” she said.

Ndjaleka said that they have observed an improvement in per capita fish consumption, rising from a mere 4 kilograms in the nineties to 16.59 kilograms as of March 2021.

She indicated that this improvement is a result of collaborative efforts between NFCPT, the fishing industry, and all participants in the fish value chain.

Despite the progress made, Ndjaleka pointed out that the government has set a new per capita fish consumption target of 20.4 kilograms per person per year, in line with the world average.

She added that there is still more work to be done in order to achieve or come closer to such a target.
