ONDJONDJO, located in Ondangwa and home to the first trading store in Ovamboland, opened in the year 1925. Today, it is celebrated through sporting activities.
The first edition of the Ondjondjo Annual Sports Tournament will be held next month in Ondangwa of the Oshana Region.
The tournament aims to unify community members of Ondangwa and the surrounding area and will take place from the 3rd to the 5th of November.
The tournament organizer, Walter Francisco, announced that it will feature categories such as youth football and veteran football, with a N$50,000 grand prize. Local entrepreneurs will also have an opportunity to do business.
Francisco emphasized that there are no restrictions on which teams can compete.
The registration fee for youth football is N$1,200, with the winner receiving N$15,000, a floating trophy, and gold medals. The second runner-up will receive N$7,000 and silver medals, while the third and fourth-place teams will each get N$3,000.
In the veteran category, the registration fee is set at N$800, with the overall winner walking away with N$4,000, a floating trophy, and gold medals. The second runner-up gets N$2,500 and silver medals, while the third-place winner receives N$2,000 and bronze medals.
Francisco mentioned that so far, they have received confirmation from 23 youth teams and 10 veterans.
“Additionally, exhibitors can reserve their stalls at the Ondjondjo Annual Sports Tournament, but we have a limited number of stalls available,” he said. The stalls are available for as little as N$500.
The draw for the tournament will be held at the Honey Moon Cafe and Pub in Omashaka on November 1, 2023.
