RESIDENTS of Ongwediva will soon have fewer concerns about water interruptions, as the Town Council began renovating the town’s water tower this week.
Town spokesperson Ottilie Shingenge said that the refurbishment of the water tower will ensure an uninterrupted water supply for the town.
According to Shingenge, work started on Monday and is expected to be completed within four months.
She indicated that the Council has allocated a budget of N$5.3 million to complete the project.
“After a thorough inspection and analysis of the current condition of the town’s water tower, the Council appointed a contractor to renovate the tower, which supplies water to other towers within the town,” she said.
She added that the tower needs refurbishment due to its age, as it has been in operation for decades. As a result, the Council included this renovation in its 2024/2025 Annual Budget to prevent further issues that could become more costly.
Shingenge said that residents have experienced water interruptions for some time.
She explained that the town’s water supply has been shut off periodically to fill the towers, which then supply different areas in and around the town.
“We used to open the water supply daily once the towers were fully filled, and residents were asked to store water in containers,” she added.
She added that the towers do not receive sufficient water, which depletes quickly, making it difficult to meet demand, while water pressure remains low when pumped from NamWater reservoirs.
