THE Ongwediva Town Council has re-elected Taarah Shalyefu as the town Mayor, and he will serve for the next 12 months.

His fellow Swapo councillor, Ulalia Katonyala, retained her position as deputy mayor of the town. Naemi Amuthenu (Swapo), Jona Helao (IPC), and Fabiam George (Swapo) remain members of the Management Committee. Meanwhile, Mathews Tiyaho and Ottillie Haitota, both from IPC, are ordinary members of the seven-member Ongwediva Town Council office bearers. George was also re-elected as the chairperson of the management committee.

In his acceptance speech, Shalyefu reaffirmed his commitment to continue advocating for hard work, innovation, and improved corporate governance, particularly accountability, integrity, and transparency as they render services to their people. Shalyefu indicated that councillors and the staff members alike are expected to be proactive and deliver quality and timely, yet fulfilling services to their residents.


“We should always bear in mind the principles of the public service charter in our minds as we render service,” he said.

Further, he indicated that in the last three years, they have passed several policies aimed at accelerating services to improve the livelihood of their people. Shalyefu added that they also have some capital projects that are currently ongoing for this financial year, such as the refurbishment & renovation of pump station no.9 at Efidi Extension 3 in Ongwediva, the provision of street lights along Ongwe street (UNAM EDS Campus) in Ongwediva, Construction of water & sewerage reticulation Networks at Extension 12.

He added that they are also busy with the construction of water reticulation infrastructure (Water Tower) at Omatando in Ongwediva, provision of High Mast at Okandjengedi and Onawa Settlement areas & installation of Christmas lights in Ongwediva. The refurbishment of the Ongwediva Water Tower, rehabilitation of the road between Oshana Regional Mall & David Shikomba Complex, which is about to be completed at the cost of approximately N$4.5 million.
