RESIDENTS of Oniipa have been urged to plant at least one tree wherever they find themselves.

This is being done in celebration of Arbor Day, which is held annually to encourage people across the globe to be part of.

The day is being held under the theme: “Forest and Health.”

Town Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Heikky Amwele said they have various trees, including fruit trees, that will be planted across the town.

According to Amwele, the day reminds people of the importance of planting for the benefits of both humans and animals.

He also said that trees are important to reduce greenhouse effects and protect the ozone layer.

“Trees provide us with shade, food, and materials that are vital,” he said.

He added that trees have also become a source of income for some people who have established nurseries for themselves and sell to the larger population.

This year, the day is being commemorated nationally at Osona village.

The day is observed in October to coincide with the onset of the rainy season and is celebrated on the 2nd Friday of October each year.

Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism Pohamba Shifeta will be launching the tree-planting season on Saturday.
