RESIDENTS of Onkumbula and the surrounding area will no longer need to travel long distances to access policing services, as the state-of-the-art Onkumbula police station was officially opened on Monday.
The construction of the new station cost the government over N$71.1 million, with construction work having started in February 2016 and concluded in June this year.
The facility consists of a charge office with five offices, a boardroom, Pol 7 and Pol 10 record and an armour room, radio room, server room, kitchen, and ablution for the members.
Moreover, the structure is also fitted with a cell block with three holding cells, a doctor’s consulting room, two two-bedroom flats, two barracks with 12 male rooms and 8 female rooms.
Officially inaugurating the new police station, Namibia Police Head Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo said that the development of infrastructure of this nature is a true reflection of the government’s commitment to enhancing safety and security in the county.
Shikongo made the remarks while addressing the gathering on Monday, saying that they are doing this through improving the working environment of police officers and bringing policing services closer to the people.
“By doing this, we are ensuring that our people in the area have access to police service,” he said.
He then appealed to the public to continue assisting the police in the fight against crime and to refrain from working together with criminals to collectively fight crime.
Oshikoto governor Penda Ya Ndakolo indicated that the inauguration of the police station is an indication of the government’s effort to bring services closer to the people.
Ya Ndakolo then urged the community of Onkumbula to report all sorts of crimes occurring for the perpetrators to be dealt with by the law.
