OSHAKATI, NOVEMBER 12 – The Oshakati East constituency has mobilized a fleet of 15 tractors to prepare fields for cultivation, following significant rainfall in the area. This initiative aims to boost agricultural productivity and signals optimism for a successful harvest season.
Oshakati East constituency councilor Abnel Shikongo confirmed the deployment of the tractors during an interview, describing the move as a sign of hope for the upcoming season.
“This is a positive indication that we can expect a fruitful rainfall season in our region,” he said.
The fleet consists of five government-owned tractors and ten privately owned ones, working together to accelerate the plowing process. Shikongo praised the support from private tractor owners, who stepped in to supplement government efforts and ensure that all farmers in the region benefit from the favorable weather conditions.
While the rainfall has been a blessing for local farmers, it has also brought some challenges. In the village of Uukwiyu Uushona, a storm recently destroyed the house of a senior citizen. Shikongo acknowledged the unfortunate incident and expressed his concern for the affected residents.
“Although we are grateful for the rain, some properties were damaged, and we are working to provide assistance to those impacted,” he said.
Despite these setbacks, Shikongo emphasized the resilience of the constituency’s residents and livestock. “Our animals are in good condition, which gives us hope for a productive year ahead,” he added.
The mobilization of tractors is part of a broader effort to support local farmers, many of whom rely on subsistence farming for their livelihoods. Currently, the tractors are plowing fields across the constituency to ensure farmers are ready for the planting season.
Shikongo also urged farmers to take full advantage of the available resources, both from the government and the private sector, to maximize agricultural output. “This collaboration between the government and private sector demonstrates our collective commitment to ensuring food security and uplifting our community,” he said.
The rainfall in Oshakati East is being celebrated as a welcome change after years of erratic weather patterns that have disrupted agriculture in northern Namibia. However, Shikongo urged residents to remain vigilant and prepared for potential storms.
“We must embrace the rain with caution and work together to overcome any challenges that arise,” he concluded.
The government, in collaboration with local authorities, is expected to continue monitoring weather patterns and providing support to mitigate the impact of any future natural disasters. For now, farmers in Oshakati East are preparing for what they hope will be a productive and prosperous season.
