The Oshakati Town Council has increased its investment for the Mayoral Cup to N$92 000 for the 4th edition.
This marks an increased investment of more than N$10 000 from last year’s tournament.
The Mayoral Cup, held annually, is scheduled for May 9-12, 2024, at the Independence Stadium.
Oshakati Town Mayor Leonard Hango said preparations are already in full swing, and this year they are going beyond sporting activities by offering trading opportunities to the youth to generate income for themselves.
Hango indicated that the idea is to continue to revive sports in the town, particularly those sports codes that have been dormant for some time.
“Through sport, we are giving back to the community. We do not just think about issuing municipal bills. We also want citizens to reap the benefits,” he said.
He added that they have four categories for this year’s tournament and a grand prize up for grabs.
In the first category, an amount of N$22 000, a trophy, and gold medals are up for grabs in the young soccer division.
The second runner-up will walk away with N$14 000 in addition to silver medals; the semi-final loser will receive N$5 500, and the quarter-final loser will receive N$1 000.
The winner of the legend soccer category will receive N$9 000, a trophy, and gold medals.
Meanwhile, the second-place winner will get N$6 000 and silver medals. Semi-finalists will receive N$3 000 each.
The legendary teams will strictly consist of players over 37 years old.
Furthermore, in the Women’s football category, the winner is expected to walk away with N$4 000, a floating trophy, and medals.
The second-place winner will get N$3 000 and silver medals, and the semi-finalists will get N$1 500.
In netball, winners will receive N$4 000, a trophy, and gold medals, while the runners-up will receive N$3 000 and silver medals, and the semi-finalists will receive N$1 500 each.
