A FEMALE resident of the Oneshila informal settlement in Oshakati fell victim to a robbery, losing a significant amount of money to suspects who employed a deceptive scheme. The incident occurred around 09:00 on Wednesday when an unknown individual approached the victim’s house, pretending to seek directions to a specific location.

The unsuspecting resident went outside to guide the individual, and they walked a short distance before the stranger proposed taking a taxi, assuring that he would cover the fare, according to the police. While in the taxi, they picked up additional passengers before heading to a location behind the Supa-Dupa mini market. At this point, another car arrived, and its occupants claimed to be police officers.

The fake cops asserted that the victim, along with the unknown men with her, was being “arrested” for allegedly “selling gold.” The suspects confiscated the victim’s phone and forced her to unlock it. Subsequently, they withdrew N$166 000 from her account. No arrests have been made, and the stolen money has not been recovered.

Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, the police community affairs officer in the Oshana Region, urged the public to exercise caution, advising against engaging in discussions with strangers posing as needing assistance. He emphasized the importance of not entering strangers’ vehicles and remaining vigilant, encouraging individuals to report such incidents to the nearest police station.
