THE Oshikuku Town Council has commenced with the rehabilitation of the town’s sewerage ponds as part of the council’s effort to ensure effective service delivery.
Oshikuku spokesperson John Siloiso said that the council has budgeted an amount of over N$1.7 million for the entire project.
Siloiso mentioned that work already started in January and will last for 6 months.
According to Siloiso, the work includes creating an embankment to stop runoff sewer water from mixing with rainwater, fencing off the whole area, establishing one more pond, and cleaning all existing ponds.
“This is the final area where wastewater from houses ends up. As such, this water is a health hazard if not handled and managed properly,” he said.
He added that the capacity of ponds is small in relation to the inflow. Therefore, cleaning the ponds to remove reeds and sludge as well as constructing additional ponds will increase capacity.
Siloiso indicated that ponds do overflow during the rainy season, posing a health hazard to residents. Creating an embankment will prevent this overflow. The current fence is damaged, and residents are accessing ponds without authorization. Therefore, a new fence will be put up to control access.
Moreover, he indicated that progress is going well, with Extension 9 being partially serviced with sewer reticulation.
