Katima Mulilo, July 28 – On July 27, 2023, Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi region of Namibia hosted the observance of the 2023 Africa Public Service Day. The theme of the event was “The African Continental Free Trade Administration to Succeed.” The occasion honoured the accomplishments of more than ten public institutions that have been instrumental in implementing reforms in the country.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, who was unavoidably absent due to other commitments, Deputy Minister of Industrialization and Trade, Verna Sinimbo, emphasized the values and principles of public service and administration. The occasion honoured public servants who play a pivotal role in the nation’s social and economic progress as Namibia commemorates 33 years of independence.
Sinimbo also took pride in her ministry’s recent recognition at the 9th Africa Public Service Day Continental commemorations in Victoria Falls, Republic of Zimbabwe. The ministry received the esteemed “1st Runner Up in the Category of Most Accountable and Transparent Institutions” award, showcasing Namibia’s commitment to excellence.
Highlighting the significance of public servants in the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) under the AU Agenda 2063, the trade minister stressed the need for modernizing public service delivery, streamlining processes, fostering harmonization between nations, and facilitating cross-border travel to fully leverage the opportunities provided by AfCFTA.
Acknowledging the challenges presented by AfCFTA, Sinimbo cautioned against unpreparedness, as it could adversely impact the economy, local industries, employment, and public revenue.
In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the minister expressed gratitude to health workers and frontline staff for their unwavering dedication to safeguarding lives and ensuring critical services continued without interruption.
Minister Sinimbo concluded by encouraging public servants to maintain their commitment to serving the people of Namibia. She urged a culture of innovation in the public sector, harnessing the digital era to enhance services, and embracing new ideas for greater responsiveness to evolving needs.
The minister also expressed appreciation for public servants’ dedication, reaffirming the government’s commitment to prioritize their well-being, despite prevailing economic challenges. -Namibia Daily News
