THE Namibian Police in the Oshikoto Region are concerned about the escalating number of drivers fleeing the scenes of road accidents and are warning road users about the aggravating nature of such conduct.
The police expressed their concern following the latest such accident that occurred between Tsumeb and Oshivelo, where a pedestrian was hit by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene. The victim was eventually found lying on the road and evacuated to the Tsumeb district hospital, where he died moments later.
The police pointed out that in the event of an accident, it is the driver’s duty and responsibility to ascertain the nature and extent of any injuries sustained and to render assistance, as well as to report such accidents to the police within 24 hours.
“Failing to do so, the police will open a case against the driver who will then face the wrath of the law,” said the police.
Law enforcement officers are also advising all members of the public to play a role in preventing accidents involving pedestrians, who are exhorted to take precautionary measures when crossing or walking beside a road.
Members of the public are cautioned against walking across a road while under the influence of alcohol.
The police added that they have observed that most pedestrians returning from drinking places under the influence of alcohol find it difficult to fully concentrate when crossing a road.
Said the police: “The outcome of this irresponsible behaviour is unnecessary death or serious injuries, including permanent disability.”
