President Geingob will be laid to rest on Sunday, the 25th of February, at a ceremony expected to draw dignitaries, citizens, and admirers from around the globe.

In a solemn declaration, President Nangolo Mbumba has announced that Sunday, the 25th of February 2024, will be a public holiday for Namibia, in honour of the late President Hage Geingob.

As a result, and as per the Public Holidays Act of 1990 (Act 26 of 1990), when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed as a public holiday.

Therefore, Monday, 26 February 2024, will be a public holiday. This arrangement is said to allow for the burial of the late President on Sunday, 25 February 2024 and the memorial service to take place on Saturday, 24 February 2024.

This is according to the Ministry of Information Communication and Technology. Transport arrangements are being made to transport the public to and from Independence Stadium on Saturday, 24th February 2024, for the main memorial service.

This is to give a dignified burial and to give all Namibians time to mourn the late President Hage Geingob.

Furthermore, daily memorial services will now take place at the Windhoek Showgrounds instead of the Sam Nujoma Stadium from 12-13 February 2024 and at the Namibia College of Open Learning (NAMCOL) Centre in Katutura from 14-16 February 2024.

Announcements will be made for the week of 19 February 2024. The daily memorial services will begin from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Meanwhile, no memorial services will take place at the residence of the late President, and the public is further implored not to assemble at the residence of the late President but to rather go at the venues selected.

In addition, the Ministry of Education Arts and Culture Executive Director Sanet Steenkamp, last week issued a directive to all schools across the country and education institutions to carry out memorial services in honour of the late President, throughout the week.
