IN ten days, the funeral of the late President Hage Geingob will take place at Heroes’ Acre at 10:00.
This was once again highlighted by Vice President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who emphasized that the High-Level Committee responsible for planning the funeral has been hard at work with arrangements. She reiterated that the Memorial Service will take place on 24 February, the day before the former president’s funeral, at Independence Stadium at 14:00. Additionally, she reminded the public that the day of former President Geingob’s burial, 25 February, will be declared a public holiday.
“In order to give a dignified burial and to give all Namibians time to mourn their beloved late President, President Nangolo Mbumba will declare Sunday, 25 February 2024, a public holiday. As per the Public Holiday’s Act of 1990 (Act 26 of 1990), when a Public Holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed, as a Public Holiday. Therefore, Monday, 26 February 2024 will be a Public Holiday,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
She added that provisions have been made for tributes by Heads of State and Government during the Memorial Service only. These, she urged, should be limited to 3 minutes. Nandi-Ndaitwah revealed that the Heads of State and Government will also have an opportunity to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the gravesite during the burial. The wreaths will be provided by the Government.
Nandi-Ndaitwah further disclosed that the burial will be followed by a luncheon, hosted by President Nangolo Mbumba, for Heads of State and Government and other dignitaries at State House.
“We are grateful to those who have already confirmed their attendance, and I would like to implore other delegations wishing to attend the State Funeral, to confirm composition of delegations by the 20th of February 2024, to assist us in finalising the preparations,” the Vice President added.
