PRESIDENT Nangolo Mbumba emphasized the remarkable relationship between President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana and the late President Hage Geingob, highlighting that their friendship led to impressive achievements benefiting both the people of Namibia and Botswana.
“As his Vice President for over six years now, I can assure you that Dr Geingob was proud of his special friendship with you, Your Excellency. As Pan-Africanists, you had a lot in common. The two of you had many dreams for Namibia and Botswana, and you realised a big one when you launched the use of the ID cards as a travel document between Namibia and Botswana,” President Mbumba said.
This groundbreaking initiative, he added, facilitates the trading of goods and services as well as the movement of people between the two countries.
President Mbumba made these remarks at the Post Memorial Service hosted in honour of late President Geingob in Botswana today. The service took place in Botswana’s capital city, Gaborone, at the Gaborone International Conference Centre, where a significant number of senior government officials, members of parliament, senior citizens, members of the diplomatic corps as well as cabinet ministers from Namibia and Botswana gathered to honour the late president’s life and legacy.
President Mbumba also underscored that the bond between President Masisi and the late President Geingob transcended governance. He highlighted that President Masisi was the first Head of State to visit President Geingob last year following an operation he had, and also the first to travel to Namibia after the late president’s passing to support the bereaved family.
Expressing appreciation to Botswana and the Batswana, President Mbumba highlighted today’s memorial service in Botswana as a demonstration of the friendship that exists between the two nations. He also thanked Botswana once again for the support and generosity offered to Namibia during the mourning period and burial of the late President Geingob.
“Namibia cannot thank you enough,” President Mbumba emphasised.
