PRESIDENT Nangolo Mbumba has expressed his gratitude to President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola for the substantial material and emotional support extended by the Angolan Government to the Namibian people in the aftermath of the passing of the late President Hage Geingob.
“President Mbumba praised President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço for his overwhelming presence during the state memorial and burial services for President Geingob,” the Namibian Presidency said.
This expression of gratitude occurred during President Mbumba’s recent one-day visit to the Republic of Angola, at the invitation of President Lourenço.
During this visit, President Mbumba also shared with President Lourenço his extensive experience in Angola in various capacities, both before and after Namibia achieved independence.
“President Mbumba informed President Lourenço that he had spent time in Angola, wearing different types of shoes during the liberation struggle, educating young Namibians in Kwanza Sul, and left Angola as Deputy Secretary for Education of the liberation movement, SWAPO, in 1988. He further informed that he had been to Angola several times, and in different capacities since independence, and was now in Angola wearing different and heavier shoes than that of President of the Republic of Namibia, following the passing of President Geingob, which has been a difficult and traumatic period for the people of Namibia,” the presidency revealed.
The president also underscored that his decision to make Angola his first work visit outside Namibia aligns with a longstanding tradition for Namibian presidents, following in the footsteps of the country’s first, second, and third presidents.
“President Mbumba assured President Lourenço that he would continue working hard to strengthen the partnership and friendship between the people and the Governments of Namibia and Angola,” the Namibian Presidency added.
