Niger, July 28 – Reports emerged that Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum has been removed from power, as soldiers made an announcement on national TV declaring their control over the government.
The troops asserted that security forces were now in charge of managing the nation and warned against any interference from external parties. This marks Niger’s seventh coup in West and Central Africa since 2020, raising concerns about its impact on democratic progress.
Niger has had a long history of coups since gaining independence from France in 1960. Despite the unfolding situation, the presidential office assured that hard-won achievements would be safeguarded.
Soldiers, including members of President Bazoum’s presidential guard, were reportedly in negotiations with the President, who is said to be safe and well, though his whereabouts remained uncertain. -Namibia Daily News
