Windhoek, July 8. – In a startling revelation, renowned political science scholar and Senior Lecturer at the University of Namibia, Dr. Job Shipululo Amupanda, has uncovered a corruption scandal involving Namibia’s Higher Education Minister, Kandjii-Murangi. The findings shed light on a deeply troubling misuse of funds related to a recent side-event organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in New York.
According to Dr. Amupanda, UNESCO invited Minister Kandjii-Murangi to attend the side-event held on 6th and 7th March 2023. The invitation, which included an all-expenses-paid trip, raised eyebrows among the Namibian public. However, it was the subsequent revelations that shocked the nation.
During the trip, it has been alleged that UNESCO paid the minister an exorbitant daily sum of US $500. On top of this, Dr. Amupanda claims that Minister Kandjii-Murangi instructed the UNESCO Namibia Office, which operates within her own ministry under her chairpersonship, to deposit the funds directly into her personal bank account. This apparent misuse of funds bypassed the separate bank account established by UNESCO Namibia to prevent such abuses.
The implications of this misconduct are significant. It is alleged that over N$400,000, earmarked for UNESCO-funded projects and contracts, found its way into the minister’s personal account. When UNESCO discovered the irregularities and initiated an inquiry, the minister reportedly tried to resolve the situation by pressuring the ministry’s financial advisor to transfer funds from the ministry’s account to UNESCO Namibia. Regrettably, the financial advisor chose to resign rather than acquiesce to this request.
The ramifications of this corruption scandal extend beyond the financial implications. Dr. Amupanda warns that this incident has brought about a serious international scandal and has placed future funding for Namibian projects supported by UNESCO in jeopardy. The potential consequences of this misuse of funds could have far-reaching impacts on the country’s development and reputation.
The allegations surrounding Minister Kandjii-Murangi’s actions also raise questions about the integrity of the Namibian government. Dr. Amupanda’s sources suggest that there may be further individuals involved in the misappropriation of funds within the cabinet. These alarming accusations shed light on a wider network of corruption that threatens the very foundation of governance in Namibia.
The revelations have left the Namibian public disillusioned and demanding accountability. Concerned citizens are now calling for a thorough investigation into these allegations, as they seek to restore faith in the government’s commitment to transparency and ethical governance. The scale of the corruption scandal, as exposed by Dr. Amupanda, reinforces the urgency for swift action to hold those responsible accountable.
As the truth behind this scandal continues to unravel, Namibians must rally together to demand answers from their leaders. The country deserves to be governed by individuals who prioritize the welfare of the nation over personal gain. It is incumbent upon the relevant authorities to address these allegations promptly and restore the public’s trust in the government. – Namibia Daily News
