A NUMBER of Swapo Party members, supporters, and sympathizers staged a street demonstration in Oniipa town in the Oshikoto Region, demanding that the party’s regional leadership reverse the suspension of the town’s mayor, Augustus Nangolo.
In their written petition, they decried Nangolo’s “unfair and unprocedural” suspension and pointed an accusing finger at Oniipa Regional Councilor Vilho Nuunyango, claiming that he interfered in the town council affairs and also in the party’s district office. They also accused him of instigating some Swapo local authority councillors to turn against Nangolo.
After declaring their loss of confidence in Nuunyango, the petitioners demanded that he explain his destructive behaviour within seven days or resign. They further demanded the urgent intervention of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development.
Swapo Party regional coordinator Armas Amukwiyu, who wrote Nangolo’s suspension letter, had earlier refused to comment on what he said were “internal matters of the party.”
